WORKING VERTICALLY / WORKING LARGE: Calligraphy for walls and other vertical surfaces

We recommend following PART ONE AND PART TWO! A discount is given for the two parts.

Some of the most exciting commissions of my 35-year career have been wall texts: calligraphy and lettering for buildings, exhibitions, installations, and more. It is time for me to share with you all the techniques that I have developed over the years. We will look at specific projects, seeing which approaches best suited the situation. You will learn how to prepare a studio-sized panel on which to practice various techniques, including brush script (pointed and flat), built-up lettering, and stenciling. We will look at design and layout; choosing the right lettering style; and how to mark out a wall before you begin. You may be thinking, “I’ll never paint on a building!” But the techniques you learn here can be applied to any number of projects, large and small.

This online course will consist of three Zoom sessions:

  • First live lesson: Demonstration followed by review of the assignment for you to do in your own time.

  • Second live lesson: Demonstration followed by a special presentation.

  • Third live lesson: Demonstration followed by a live crit session in which work posted by students will be reviewed and discussed.

* Sessions will be recorded and made available to students for a period of 4 months.
